About Hike & Draw, LLC

What is Hike & Draw?

Hike & Draw is a Limited Liability Company (LLC) founded and operated by artists Andres Quintero and Karla Sanders. Hike & Draw sells art on paper prints and canvases fully conceptualized and designed by Andres and Karla, who work with a California-based printing company to physically produce and ship the designs to customers.

Why did you start Hike & Draw?

It seems both Karla and Andres were born with a creative, entrepreneurial spirit. We always wanted to share the joy of places we love through our art, particularly maps and posters. While working jobs in advertising and graphic design, we began selling our work online and after a few years established Hike & Draw.

Why is your art about National Parks?

Most of our art is inspired by the National Parks of America, thanks to visiting the parks and a passion for the idea behind the parks. We believe art is a form of storytelling that can inspire care for these public wild lands, help celebrate our national treasures, and start conversations about conservation. Our own love of the parks idea is what motivates us to create the art and we aim to share that with our audience.

Why did you name your shop Hike & Draw?

We like straightforward things. You know, coffee without cream, no fine print, pencil & paper, that sort of thing. So we created a simple name that captures both worlds we love - straight to the point! We hope the name inspires you too. Go on a hike and once you're back inside, be creative. There is a beautiful harmony that exists between art and nature, don't you think?

What's your favorite park?

So far... Cuyahoga Valley National Park! Okay, that may be surprising to hear, but it holds a lot of symbolism for us as a park we lived close to. Cuyahoga Valley NP inspired us in the early days of establishing Hike & Draw. Second on the list for Andres: Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Second on the list for Karla: Sequoia National Park.

How do you get inspired for your work?

We are currently embarking on a National Park Quest as a way to gain insights and learn about the parks for our work. You can follow along on our blog at nationalparkquest.com

How do you make your maps and prints?

Karla studied cartography and this education set the foundation for our illustrated maps. We both studied illustration and graphic design, and have created our own work for many years before working together as artists. Combining these skills, this is our process:

  • We begin by talking through concepts. Usually these are inspired by an experience with a park or story we read.
  • We research each potential idea and brainstorming on composition and aesthetic. Depending on the piece, we take turns creating hand sketches and drawings.
  • Each design is based on an original hand drawing.
  • From there we illustrate the piece using digital tools and techniques.
  • For maps, we assemble vector data and design it with our historic style.
  • After creation, each piece is proof-read and checked for quality.
  • The final step is working with our printing and distribution partner in California to test the print before adding it to our shop.
  • We love receiving feedback from our customers and other park enthusiasts.
